Thank you, Alaska.

Over 1470 individuals and 210 music venues, businesses, and organizations participated in the first Alaska Music Census.

What is this project?

The Alaska Music Census is a grassroots non-profit effort to assess the size and impact of the Alaska music scene and all its participants. Our sixty-day public survey concluded on Sept. 2nd, 2023.

Data analysis takes place as expert partners have availability and time to do research on specific questions. We’ll release their reports along with our own results as they’re completed and reviewed.

The AK Music Census was created and staffed by Alaskan musicians, for Alaskan musicians through AKIMI with generous support from the Alaska State Council for the Arts and the Atwood Foundation, as well as the Municipality of Anchorage and the City and Borough of Juneau.

What happens when the surveys close?

Now that the Alaska Music Census has concluded, we have a lot of local musicians and music businesses to thank for sharing the news and generating such an incredible response.

We also have a lot of homework to do — data to clean and organize, reports to turn in, evaluations of what happened and how to get better. (See our FAQ’s to learn more about the data itself.)

We’ll be sharing a deep dive about what we’ve learned so far at the AKIMI Office Hours sesssion in April via Zoom — you can sign up for that session here.

If you want to be informed about what we learn as we lear it, sign up for our email list. We send messages about 6-10 times per year, about this research and about other resources for Alaskans who want to see our music scene thrive.
